32. Ders Sık Yapılan Hatalar - Common Mistakes
Ana dili İngilizce olmayanların sıkça yaptığı hataları öğrenmenin iki türlü yararı oluır. Birincisi bu hataları tekrarlamayız. Ayrıca, bu çalışma sırasında İngilizce hakkında değerli bilgiler ediniriz.
1- Absorbed : (bir konuyla çok ilgilenmek) “at” ile değil, “in” ile kullanılır.
Yanlış (Don't say) : The scientist was absorbed at his work.
Doğru (Say) : The scientist was absorbed in his work. (Alim işine dalmıştı.)
2.Accuse of : suçlamak
Yanlış (Don't say) : Her friends accused her for stealing.
Doğru (Say): Her friends accused her of stealing.
Fakat aynı anlama gelen, “charge” fiili “with” ile kullanılmalıdır.
He was charged with murder. (Cinayetle suçlandı)
3.Accustomed to (alışmak,kanıksamak): not with.
Yanlış (Don't say): I’m accustomed with cold weather.
Doğru (Say) : I’m accustomed to cold weather.(Soğuk havaya alıştım.)
4.Afraid of : korkmak,
Yanlış (Don't say): The woman is afraid from the dog.
Doğru (Say) : The woman is afraid of the dog.(Kadın köpekten korkuyor veya korkar.)
5.Aim at : nişan almak, hedef almak
Yanlış (Don't say) : The hunter aimed on (veya against) the bird.
Doğru(Say) : The hunter aimed at the bird.(Avcı kuşa nişan aldı.)
6.Angry with: kızmak, öfkelenmek
Yanlış (Don't say): The manager was angry against me.
Doğru (Say) : The manager was angry with me.(Yönetici bana kızdı)
7.Anxious about: endişelenmek, meraklanmak
Yanlış(Don't say): His family was anxious for his health.
Doğru (Say): His family was anxious about his health.(Ailesi onun sağlığından endişe duydu.)
8.Arrive at : Varmak, ulaşmak
Yanlış(Don't say) : We arrived to the city at midnight.
Doğru (Say): We arrived at the city at midnight(Şehire gece yarısı vardık.)
9.Ashamed of: utanmak,hicap duymak
Yanlış(Don't say): We’re always ashamed from him.
Doğru (Say) : We’re always ashamed of him (Ondan daima utandık.)
10.Believe in: İnanmak, iman etmek
Yanlış( Don't say) : Everybody believes to him.
Doğru (Say) : Everybody believes in him.(Herkes ona inanır.)
Doğru (Say) : We, muslims, believe in Allah.(Biz müslümanlar Allah’a inanırız(iman ederiz)).
11.Boast of: Böbürlenmek
Yanlış (Don't say): She boasted for her beauty.
Doğru (Say): She boasted of (veya about) her beauty.
12.Careful of : Dikkat etmek, özen göstermek
Yanlış (Don't say) : You are so careful for your health.
Doğru (Say): You are very careful of your health. (Sağlığına çok dikkat ediyorsun)
13. Watch : Aynı anlama gelmek üzere watch prepozisyonsuz kullanılır.
Doğru (say): Watch your steps (words). (Adımlarına (sözlerine) dikkat et.)
14.To travel by train, bus, aeroplane : Seyahat etmek
Yanlış (Don't say): They always travel with train(bus veya aeroplane)
Doğru (Say) : They always travel by train (veya bus, aeroplane.) (Onlar daima trenle (veya otubüsle, uçakla) seyahat ederler.)
15.Complain of : Şikayet etmek
Yanlış (Don't say) : Many people complain for the cold.
Doğru(Say) : Many people complain of the cold. (Bir çok insan soğuktan şikayet eder.
16.Composed of : meydana gelmek,oluşmak
Yanlış (Don't say) : Our team is composed from ten people.
Doğru(Say) : Our team is composed of ten people. (Bizim takım on kişiden meydana geliyor.
17.Confident in : Güven duymak, güvenmek
Yanlış (Don't say): She has great confidence to me.
Doğru (Say) : She has great confidence in me.(Onun bana çok güveni vardır.)
Aynı anlama gelen trust fiili prepozisyonsuz kullanılır.
Doğru : I trust him with all my heart.(Ona bütün kalbimle inanırım.)
18.Conform to: Uymak, itaat etmek
Yanlış (Don't say) : You should all conform with the rules.
Doğru ( Say) : You should all conform to rules. (You should all conform to rules.)
19.Congratulate on : kutlamak, tebrik etmek
Yanlış (Don't say) : I congratulate you for your success.
Doğru (Say) : I congratulate you on (veya upon) your success.
20.Consist of : içermek, ihtiva etmek
Yanlış (Don't say) : A year consists from twelve months.
Doğru (Say) : A year consists of twelve months.(Bir yıl on iki ay içerir.)
21.Covered with : kaplanmak, örtülmek
Yanlış (Don'say) : The mountains are covered by snow.
Doğru (Say) : The mountains are covered by snow. (Dağlar karla kaplı.)
22.Cure of : iyileşmek, düzelmek
Yanlış (Don't say) : The patient was cured from his illness.
Doğru (Say) : The patient was cured of his illness.(Hastanın hastalığı düzeldi.)
Fakat aynı anlama gelen “recover” fiili “from” ile kullanılır.
She has recovered from flu. (Gribi iyileşti.)
23.Depend on or upon: Bir şeye bağlı olmak, dayanmak
Yanlış (Don't say) : It all depends to you
Doğru (Say): It all depends on (or upon) you.(Herşey sana bağlı)
24.Deprive of : Mahrum olmak, yoksun kalmak
Yanlış (Don'say) : They were deprived from their freedom.
Doğru (Say) : They were deprived of their freedom.(Özgürlükten mahrum edildiler.)
25.Die of an illness : Bir hastalıktan ölmek
Yanlış (Don't say) : Thousands of people have died from malaria.
Doğru (Say) : Thousands of people have died of malaria.( Binlerce insan sıtmadan öldü.)
26.Different from : Farklı olmak
Yanlış (Don't say): My book is different from yours.
Doğru (Say) : My book is different than yours.(Benim kitabım seninkinden farklı.)
27.Disappointed in: hayal kırıklığına (hüsrana) uğramak
Yanlış (Don't say) : I was disappointed from his manners.
Doğru (Say) : I was disappointed in his manners. (Onun terbiyesinden dolayı hayal kırıklığına uğradım.)
28.Divide into parts : Parçalara bölmek
Yanlış (Don't say) : I divided the cake in four equal parts.
Doğru (Say) : I divided the cake into four equal parts.( Pastayı dört eşit parçaya böldüm.)
29.Doubt of veya about : Kuşkulanmak, şüphe etmek
Yanlış (Don't say) : I have no doubt for his ability (honesty).
Doğru (Say) : I have no doubt of (or about) his ability (honesty). (Onun yeteneğinden (dürüstlüğünden) hiç kuşkum yok.)
Ama aynı anlama gelen “suspect” prepozisyonsuz kullanılır.
I suspect him. (Ondan kuşkulanıyorum.)
30.Dressed in : Giyinmek, bezenmek
Yanlış (Don't say) : The girl was dressed all with white.
Doğru (Say) : The girl was all dressed in white. ( Kız beyazlar giyinmişti.)
31.Exception to : İstisna olmak
Yanlış (Don't say) : This is an exception of the rule.
Doğru (Say) : This is an exception to the rule.( Bu kuralın istisnasıdır.)
32.Exchange for : Takas etmek, değiş tokuş yapmak
Yanlış (Don't say) : They exchanged food by machinery.
Doğru (Say) : They exchanged food for machinery.( Yiyecek karşılığında makinaları takas ettiler)
33.Fail in : Başarısız olmak, kalmak, çuvallamak
Yanlış (Don't say) : He has failed from mathematics
Doğru(Say) : He has failed in mathematics ( Matematikten kaldı)
He failed to pass the exam. (Sınavı geçemedi.)
34.Full of : Dolu olmak
Yanlış (Don't say) : The jar was full with oil.
Doğru (Say) : The jar was full of oil.( Kavanoz yağ ile doluydu.)
Buna mukabil : The room was filled with smoke. ( Oda dumanla doluydu.)
35.Get rid of : gidermek,yok etmek
Yanlş (Don't say) : I shall get rid from him.
Doğru (Say) : I shall get rid of him. (Onun hakkından geleceğim.)
36.Glad of or about (Memnun, mutlu olmak)
Yanlış (Don’t say): I am happy with the news.
Doğru (Say) : I am glad of ( veya about) the news. (Haberden memnunum.)
37.Good at : Bir konuda iyi olmak

40.Independent of : Bağımsız olmak
